FIFA World Cup Draw Ignites World Cup Fever!
All 32 teams participating at the FIFA 2010 World Cup finals have finally discovered their fate. The final draw for South Africa 2010 took place in Cape Town on Friday 4th December.
Host nation, South Africa's opening match on the 11th June will be played against Mexico at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana will battle it out for two qualifying places for the Round of 16, meaning two nations with passionate support will depart the tournament early.
There could well be a high-profile casualty from Group G too, after Brazil, Korea DPR, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Portugal were drawn together, in the tournaments toughest group.
| GROUP A | GROUP B | GROUP C | GROUP D | GROUP E | GROUP F | GROUP G | GROUP H |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOUTH AFRICA | ARGENTINA | ENGLAND | GERMANY | HOLLAND | ITALY | BRAZIL | SPAIN |
| MEXICO | SOUTH KOREA | USA | AUSTRALIA | JAPAN | NEW ZEALAND | NORTH KOREA | HONDURAS |
| FRANCE | NIGERIA | SLOVENIA | GHANA | CAMEROON | PARAGUAY | IVORY COAST | CHILE |
| URUGUAY | GREECE | ALGERIA | SERBIA | DENMARK | SLOVAKIA | PORTUGAL | SWITZERLAND |
A highlight of the draw is the eye-catching encounter between England and the USA on the 12th June at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg. England are favourites, but the game evokes the Americans' famous 1-0 win over their transatlantic cousins at Brazil 1950. For Capello, it is vital he has a full strength squad after a strenuous Premier League season finishes and the big debate is whether David Beckham will make the England squad and play against his LA Galaxy team mate and the USA player of the year, Landon Donovan.
World Cup '86 winners Argentina, Nigeria and Greece will get the chance to revive their group rivalry from 1994, while the heavyweight collision between Portugal and Brazil on 25th June also has the feel of a derby. Holland look like they are well placed to restore the faith after dissapointing at 2008 and being drawn in Group E. Italy are in arguably the easiest group, so should progress well as they often do. Spain, the tournament favourites will not be troubled by Group H and will look to go one better than Euro 2008 winners. They look like the team to beat in order to win the FIFA World Cup final on the 11th July 2010 in the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
May we wish all supporters from all competing football nations, the very best of luck in South Africa 2010!
