The History Of The Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup was born when a golf trophy was donated by a Samuel Ryder. Samuel Ryder (24 March 1858 - 2 January 1936) was an English entrepreneur and keen golf enthusiast. He had the idea of selling garden seeds in "penny packets" and built up a very successful business on this original concept. He first funded an international golf competition in 1926, then sponsored the Ryder Cup and donated a gold trophy for the first biennial golf championship between the very best of professional golfers from the United States and the United Kingdom in 1927.
Early golf matches between the two sides were fairly evenly matched, but after the Second World War, the US dominance led to an agreement to include continental Europe in the competition alongside Britain and Ireland in 1979. The change was prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers of the time, including Severiano Ballesteros. He and Antonio Garrido became the first Spaniards to play in the event in 1979. Since then, Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
Following this change the event has enjoyed more competitive matches. The United States have won seven times and the European team retaining the Cup once and winning seven times.
